Mrs. Joan Olivia McCrimmon Watkins was born to Arthur Telfair and Trannie Ferrell McCrimmon on July 1, 1938. She was the oldest of three girls born to this union.
Joan was educated in Wake County Public Schools and St. Monica’s Cathedral. She also attended Washington High School and J. W. Ligon High School, where she graduated in 1955. She furthered her studies at St. Augustine’s College and Shaw University, where she graduated in 1963 with a BA in Education.
Her 35 years as a public school teacher were outstanding and included Franklin County schools, Rocky Mount Public schools and finally Wake County public schools. She taught last at Emma Conn school before retirement. Her expertise and love was for students ~ kindergarten through third grade.
Joan married Charles Watkins, Jr. and to this union three children were born. Joan also had one step-daughter.
She was preceeded in death by her mother, father, one sister (Vertis Mae McCrimmon) and her oldest son, Roderick.
Surviving to cherish her memories are; son, Ronald Charles (Angel) of Atlanta, daughter, Regina Christian Watkins Byrd of the home; step-daughter, Markette Hester of Raleigh; sister, Shelia McCrimmon Williams of Raleigh. She also leaves four loving grandchildren; Mia Rodman of Raleigh, Zion Carr of Raleigh, Jordan and Jaden Watkins of Atlanta, GA. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.
